1. What is coconut fiber

Coconut fiber, extracted from the husk of coconuts, serves as a fundamental component with a myriad of uses. Beyond its primary role in the production of coconut fiber rugs, it offers various additional applications, including erosion control, heat insulation, soil moisture enhancement, soil conditioning for improved aeration, and stimulation of root development. However, it is essential to select well-aged coconut fiber, as the natural tannins present in fresh coconut fiber can have adverse effects on plant growth.

 2. The types of coconut fiber 

Brown coir, which is more commonly used, is obtained from mature coconuts, while white coir, which is finer, is extracted from immature green coconuts after soaking for up to 10 months. Mature coconut fibers contain more lignin, a complex wood chemical, and less cellulose compared to fibers like flax or cotton. Coconut fibers can reach lengths of up to 35 cm with a diameter of 12-25 micrometers. Among plant fibers, coconut fiber has one of the highest lignin contents, making it sturdy but less flexible than cotton and unsuitable for dyeing. Coconut fiber has lower tensile strength compared to banana fibers but excels in resistance to microorganisms and saltwater.

3. Properties of coconut fiber

Coconut fiber is an organic material that can be recycled. Its pH level is 5.5, and its quality remains unaffected at lower pH levels. Coconut fiber possesses several chemical properties and characteristics. It contains approximately 80% cellulose and around 18% lignin.Reactivity: It reacts with both bases (e.g., NaOH) and acids (e.g., H2SO4 72%, HCl 44%, H3PO4 85%, etc.). It is also influenced by temperature, decomposing at 180°C. Additionally, it is susceptible to oxidative agents like H2O2 and O2.Dyeability: Coconut fiber is not easily dyeable.
In terms of physical properties: It has a relatively low specific gravity. Its tensile strength is not uniform, with fibers having diameters ranging from 100-300 μm (comprising 79% of the total). The average tensile strength of coconut fibers is approximately 105.3 MPa, which is in line with Rai’s publication [10], where coconut fiber’s tensile strength ranged from 106-175 MPa.

4. Uses of coconut fiber in today’s life

  • Packaging: Coconut fiber is used in bags, brushes, and as a component in packaging materials.
  • Flooring and Bedding: It is used in mats, carpets, and mattresses for its natural and eco-friendly properties.
  • Insulation: Coconut fiber is utilized in thermal insulation materials.

When combined with Cocona fibers, they provide excellent UV protection, with UPF ratings of up to 50 (the highest possible rating).
